Working on your business, rather than in it
Passion
We usually start a business doing something that we enjoy and are passionate about. Pretty soon reality kicks in and we have to deal with the things we are not so passionate about - difficult employees, paying salaries, paying tax, awkward customers, paying invoices, raising invoices, chasing customer payments - need I go on? We realise that support for the owner manager is thin on the ground.
The Basics
You have probably taken care of the basics, engaged an accountant who deals with the compliance i.e. Year End accounts, HMRC, companies house etc and a solicitor to check your contracts of employment, but when did you last develop or review the strategy for your business? When did you last find time to work out how profitable your products and services are, or whether you made any money on that fixed cost project/contract? Have you ever reviewed your internal processes so that you understand what is making your business tick?
Building blocks
The answer is probably no, because you have been working flat out on satisfying customer orders, yet these are the fundamentals to running your business effectively, the building blocks. Working on your business is the only way to increase efficiency and profitability. I know you want to do the things you are passionate about; after all, that's why you went into business in the first place. So as an owner manager where can you find support?
